First of all: I would never call me a professional skin care expert! I´m based on my own skin-issues and my job very intrested in this specific topic.
Skin care and skin probleme are quite often misjudged because of the cosmetic industry and a hole bunch of myths.
The most important thing that you have to do is "getting to know your skin". Sounds awkward...But you have to know what your skin needs and what not to provide the best skin care system.
I will talk or write about some myth about skin that need to be busted. Call my SkinMythBuster!
I have to be one of the five skin type (normal, combination, dry, sensitive, acne prone).
False! You can be two, three or even five at one time. And...most important your skin changes a lot. During the seasons and years. You may have a normal skin now and in two weeks you have dry skin with spots. So look at your face closely and don´t trust the nice woman at the clinique or whatever counter. ;)
You can´t change your skin. Of course acne can be healed but not dry skin or sensitive skin. It will stay dryer or more sensitive than others. That´s a matter of fact. Accept it!
Tea Tree helps my spots to heal.
Can be true and false. Many people are allergic to tea tree and doesn´t even notice that. I would stay away from radio oils when you have spots. Better is an AHA creme. Salicylic acid (BHA) can also help, but AHA is definitly more effective and doesn´t harm the skin as much. Remember sunscreen when you use acids on your skin!
Picking my pimples makes them worse.
True true true. I know it´s hard for many people (for me as well), but picking your pimple makes it worse. You basicly infect the hole area with bacteria and that can cause herpes etc. Yes herpes! Wash your hands as often as possible and try to leave your hands down.
I can´t mix skin care items from different brands. A hole range for one skin type works best. The pricey ones are better.
False. Many Youtube Gurus show in their review a hole range of products. I can say that less is more. According to my first answer you don´t have one skintype, so a hole range of products for normal skin will probably won´t work a lot.
Try to find basic products (doesn´t have to be expensive). For example: a basic moisturizer without any fancy ingredients. Lavera basic moisturizing creme for example or any other brand that is ok for your skin. Find an oilfree sunscreen for everyday. The most important product is for me the cleanser. A use soap...yes soap...sea salt soap. And it´s great and inexpensive. For me the fewer ingredients a product has, the better it will probably perform for me. Drink enough! Water or tea without sugar. And that is all.
My skin never looked better. And i have all 5 skin types in my face and neck.
Expensive products work better.
False. Just take a look at what goss makeupartist has to say about this topic: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yHdon3vEYHo
You can find great products for a great price. They may not look as fancy or have a fancy name or a celebrity on it´s advert, but it will work just as fine or even better than the expensive one.
Sweets and sugar make me breakout.
That is not proven yet. There are quite a few studies about acne caused by eating behaviour. But at the moment i would say: no, thats not possible or better not the only reason for acne.
Acne is caused by make up, air pollution, hormones, bacteria and STRESS.
A common place for breakouts is the chin area. That can be a sign for a damaged gastro-intestinal-flora. That can happen because of too much coffee and other bad eating habits.
That is it for now. I could write on and on. Feel free to ask as much as you want. I will try to answer.
